Stephen was a seventeen year old high school senior who was displaying a number of alcohol-related issues at school. Consequently, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be allowed to return to class.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school situation with his Mom and Dad. His Mother and Father were "old school" and explained to Stephen that dropping out of school was not a workable educational game plan. They explained to Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would more likely than not be like a lead weight around his feet that could conceivably encumber his educational aspirations for the rest of his life. Moreover, Stephen's Mom and Dad were very upset that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his pals in the second.
It was obvious that his parents were absolutely in agreement with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his conversation with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in due course agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen called the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his fifth period class.
When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she immediately analyzed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related activities caused quite a bit of concern by the school administrators.
Quite frankly, Stephen questioned why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school psychologist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking behavior? Since virtually all of his pals drink as much if not more than he does, fundamentally, drinking shouldn't be such a big issue. Stated more forcefully, if just about everybody is drinking, why is this such a big thing?
In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to thwart his ability to act like a responsible young man. As pronounced by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your peers drink wine coolers, beer, hard liquor, or wine does not mean that it is the best thing to do for you."
Fortunately, Miss Pender was very organized for her scheduled time with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had underlined that outlined diverse drinking statistics and facts that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of information that applied chiefly to teens.
After Miss Pender listed the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was clear that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a real bombshell to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to put in plain words the short term and the long term effects of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, but she also made the effort to authenticate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency statistics and facts that related to everyone in general, and especially to teens.
Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen promptly comprehended why he should not be engaging in hazardous and abusive drinking with or without his pals anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the materials she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
