For those who can afford it, Audible is an excellent choice. They have a massive selection of whole audio books on CD, including a big number of new releases from the most popular authors around. The interface for downloading seems to be easy enough to use, and the files are able to be played on any digital music player on the market. But as I said, I didn't want to pay for a membership, so I continued searching.
I then found a web site called Libras which offers free unabridged books on cd that anybody can download without paying one dime. The catch is that they only manage periodicals which are in the public domain (meaning titles which are more than 75 years old) and the works are read by volunteers. If you like reading classics and do not mind the wildly varying degree of aptitude amongst the people who volunteer, then this would be a great alternative to joining a pay-to-listen program.
The best source of free complete books on cd ended up to be my local public library. My valid membership card allows me to "borrow" complete audio-books for either 14 or 21 days, after which time the mp3s expire and can't be played any longer. Two to three weeks is a great deal of time to get through one single book, so I have never had an issue with the time limit.
