When you are in some vocations it is difficult to separate yourself from work since individuals like to ask for advice. This is something which I experience very often because I'm a social worker. When people find this out they like to request my view about what they should do about different circumstances, usually involving one of their relatives or neighbors. This can become inconvenient, but being in a helping profession this is part of the job. Many individuals do not know where to turn to get services for mental health needs, consequently they find it easier to ask someone they know how to do this.
Most of the affiliates of our church know that I'm a social worker. We had an incident that occurred during a church occasion that called for my knowledge. We were gathered in our fellowship area for a potluck dinner one Sunday evening. One of the church members was sitting off by themselves. I have spoken with her at other functions and she has told me that she has difficulties with anxiety. When I saw her I noticed that her skin texture was flushed and she seemed to be having a hard time controlling her breathing. I saw the early symptoms of an anxiety attack. I knew that they would get worse rather speedily. I quietly asked our pastor if he would open his office. I went over to the woman and asked her to come into the minister's office with me. As we were walking towards the office she told me that she was having sharp chest pains. She doesn't have a past record of heart disease so I figured that the pains were yet another of the symptoms of an anxiety attack. After we were inside the office I had her concentrate on doing some deep breathing exercises with me. I peacefully rubbed her fingers and kept repeating the directives for the breathing that I was doing with her. She had been heavily sweating so I opened a window, although it was very cold outside. The cold air along with the deep breathing started to calm her. She admitted that she had once been quite anxious over the past couple of days and that she had not taken her medicine that day. As we talked most of the symptoms of the apprehension assault dissipated.
Our church is very close to a hospital and I asked her if she wished to be checked there to make sure that the chest pains had been part of the apprehension. She informed me that she was sure they were and that if she had just a couple more moments to compose herself she thought she would have the capacity to leave for home. I told her that no one in the gathering had seen our departure because they were visiting and having canapes. She agreed to join me in the party with the promise that I would take her home the moment she asked. She ended up staying for the majority of the evening. She told me when I drove her home that if she had been alone she would have called an ambulance due to the fact that she thought the symptoms of the anxiety attack were a heart assault instead. I told her that this was a common mistake and that she should be more conscious of how her anxiety impacts her.
