Lyme's disease is a condition that animals may get through the bite of an infected tick. This is common in the northwestern and mid-Atlantic United States. The disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. Ticks acquire this disease following biting affected deer or mice.
Cats manifest various symptoms from Lyme’s disease, this can make it hard to form a diagnosis without tests. Common symptoms are joint pain, tiredness, anorexia and lameness. After the veterinarian has observed the symptoms, they will do a test to see if it is Lyme's. The vet will do two blood tests. The first examines for Lyme’s disease. The majority of cats will test positive for this, although they do not get Lyme's. For this reason they do the second test. This test looks for a low red blood cell count. If the count is low, then a final Lyme's disease diagnosis is made. The cat will then be initiated on a regime of antibiotics to cure the disease.
This is all quite uncomfortable for the cat, and very expensive for you, so, how can you prevent Lyme’s disease in cats? The greatest prevention is to restrict their access to the exterior. Indoor cats are much more safe from conditions like this. However, even indoor cats are not completely safe. You, or a dog, can easily bring a tick into the house, that can find its way to the cat (this occurs more frequently than you would imagine!). This is especially true in the parts of the country where ticks are common.
If your cat does go outside, or you think your cat may get bit by a tick indoors, then you will probably prefer to try to use a tick collar or spray. These eliminate ticks before they can attack the cat. Others will just make the cat seem uninviting to the tick, via a scent.
